Denmark and Greenland

Denmark is a rich country. Nevertheless, 59,000 children in Denmark live below what the EU refers to as the poverty line. Save the Children supports vulnerable children in Denmark and Greenland.

These are examples of our national work:

Children’s homes: Every year, between 100 and 150 children arrive in Denmark unaccompanied. Save the Children has two children’s homes for refugee children and a residence for immigrant girls.

Host families: Socially vulnerable children get the opportunity to get away from home for a while, spending time with Save the Children’s voluntary host families who spend their weekends and holidays relieving single parents, among others.

Camps: Children who would not otherwise have the opportunity to go on holiday can fill their photo album with happy memories from Save the Children’s pram camps, boys-and-girls camps (for teenagers) and activity camps for entire families.

Nature Excursions: Save the Children has its own nature guide, who takes children aged 6 to 17 on journeys to explore nature, and teaches adults who work with children to inspire them to use nature. Besides learning about nature, the activities also develop and strengthen the children socially and mentally.

Drop-in centres in Greenland: At Save the Children’s drop-in centres, Greenlandic children can enter a safe haven where home problems are left at the door, with time for school homework and socialising in a friendly atmosphere.

Bullying
Bullying is worst among schoolchildren aged 10-14 years. However, the problem can be addressed as early as the preschool age and during the first years of primary school.

Save the Children is facing bullying head-on through the project “Free from Bullying”, an initiative taken by HRH Crown Princess Mary. Read more at: www.maryfonden.dk

The project includes a suitcase for schools and preschools with tools to prevent bullying.
