Africa
This is a short introduction to what we do in Africa. You can find further information in the publication list below.
Angola: 30 years of civil war ended in 2002, but Angola is still struggling. Especially the school system is in ruins. Save the Children works to ensure access to school and quality education for children affected by war and armed conflict.
Ethiopia: 80% of the population in Ethiopia lives on less than 2 Euro per day. Furthermore Ethiopia is suffering a new kind of food crisis, caused by a lethal combination of drought, and rocketing food prices. Millions of people are starving. Save the Children mainly works with emergency relief, education, protection and HIV/AIDS.
Sierra Leone: In Sierra Leone, one out of four children die before the age of five, and the country is ranked last in the UN Human Development Index. From 1991-2002 a civil war was fought over power and diamonds. Thousands of lives were lost and the war is considered one of the most vicious in history. Save the Children supports health clinics, the education system and works to protect children against abuse and exploitation.
Somalia: Violence and chaos are a big part of the Central and Southern Sudan and the country is highly affected by war and insecurity. Although the situation is quite better in the Northern part – also called Somaliland - it is still a very poor community with rough conditions, especially for children. In Somaliland Save the Children works with education, vocational training and child protection.

Sudan: For decades a civil war has ravaged Sudan and more than two million people have lost their lives. Four million people have been internally displaced, but a peace agreement was signed in January 2005. Save the Children supports education in the Southern Sudan, and in the Darfur region Save the Children provides relief aid and access to health services and education.
Uganda: The civil war in Northern Uganda lasted 22 years. A peace agreement was signed in 2008. During the war almost 25,000 children were abducted and used as child soldiers or ‘wives’ in the army. Save the Children supports reintegration of child soldiers, education-, health- and HIV/AIDS programs.
