Children in war and disaster
Up to 300 million children in the world are affected by war or disaster. Some are forced to become child soldiers or child workers, while others are sexually abused. 40 million children never pass through the school gates.
Save the Children Denmark works closely with the other member organisations of the International Save the Children Alliance. When a disaster strikes, the alliance decides what kind of intervention is needed, and how the effort is to be organised.
"When Disaster Strikes"
Save the Children Denmark's emergency film shows how Save the Children works when disaster strikes around the world:
Protection
Wars and disasters make children even more vulnerable to abuse, violence, disease and malnutrition.
Save the Children works to protect children in war and disatser against:
- Separation from the family
- Sexual abuse and violence
- Physical harm
- Recruitment of child soldiers
- Abuse of children who are refugees or internally displaced
- Lack of access to education
Education
One way of protecting children is to secure their education.
72 million children in the world do not attend school. According to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, all children have the right to do so.
This is why, Save the Children is helping to:
- Build and rebuild schools
- Distribute teaching materials
- Train teachers and inform about children’s rights
Rewrite the future
Rewrite the Future is the first global campaign involving all 27 members of the Save the Children Alliance. Save the Children is calling on governments and international agencies to put policies and resources in place to provide quality education for all children. More than 37 million children around the world can't go to school because they live in countries affected by conflict. This is over half the number of children out of school worldwide. Millions more are receiving a substandard education.
Through this campaign we intend to bring education and hope to those millions of children affected by conflict.
Advocacy
The Save the Children Alliance has offices in New York, Brussels and Geneva. This brings us closer to the UN and EU, among others, which we try to influence.
Save the Children Denmark carries out studies and produces documentation that may substantiate recommendations and legal reforms in Denmark and the rest of the world.
Children's Emergency Fund
The Children’s Emergency Fund is Save the Children’s facility to help children and families who suddenly find themselves in the midst of a disaster.
For instance, the Children’s Emergency Fund has helped children during the cyclone in Myanmar and the drought in Ethiopia. |
