Save the Children Denmark has received a substantial grant of 2.9 million Euro over three years to support vocational education and training for improved employment amongst youth in Somalia (Somaliland, Puntland and Central-South Somalia).
The European Commission is behind this donation.
Unemployment amongst young Somalis is very high (estimated at 40 percent). This is mainly due to the prolonged civil strife and conflict in Somalia with subsequent deterioration of vocational education opportunities. Vocational education and training leads to jobs. And jobs bring income to overcome poverty.
This project called “Vocational Education and Training for Accelerated Promotion of Employment” (VETAPE) targets 6,000 disadvantaged youths with technical vocational education through institutes and linked to job opportunities afterwards. In addition, some 4,000 ex-militia and disadvantaged youths will be targeted through functional literacy and numeracy. The project is implemented through a consortium with the following partners: Care and Comitato Internazionale Per Lo Sviluppo Dei Populi.
